Windows 11: operating system or consistent update?

However, although the name of this new Windows conveys the idea of in-depth transformations, it would be inaccurate to think that it is a clean break with the previous OS. For a start, Microsoft has chosen to keep the Windows 10 kernel (Windows NT 10.0), whereas the version number used to change with each operating system deployment. We also note that the build names follow each other (from 21H1 for Windows 10 to 21H2 for Windows 11). Like Windows 10 updates, Windows 11 is distributed for free via Windows Update. Finally, we remind you that some of the Windows 11 exclusives, such as the redesign of the Microsoft Store, should make their appearance on Windows 10 in the short term.

In short, on the form, Windows 11, code name Sun Valley, would be nothing more than a very important upgrade of Windows 10. This is corroborated by the various speeches made by Nadella, who presented Windows 10 as "the next chapter", in other words, "we turn the page and make a new start", and Windows 11 as "the next generation of Windows", which is the logical continuation, the natural evolution of the system "as a service" that reconciled users and Windows after the misstep Windows 8.

However, calling Windows 11 an update that is a little more extensive than usual would not do justice to what it really is. We're not talking about simple patches or classic improvements here, but rather a redesigned environment, both in terms of graphics and user experience. Less exciting, the system requirements, which benchmark almost all PCs released before 2016, however powerful they may be, betray the technical requirements of an OS rather than those of a traditional upgrade.
